Does the notion of paying nothing to jump on a ski lift anytime you choose catch your attention? Good, it should! If you play your cards right, you can effectively ski free for the rest of the 2009/10 season. And it can FEEL like you are skiing for free all through 2010/11!

As is true with every promise of anything free, there’s a catch. But this particular catch can also save you a bundle and get you out skiing more next year. Here’s how it works:

You have to buy a season pass at an area. And you have to do it now. Depending on the area you choose, that can cost you anywhere from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand dollars. I know, that doesn’t sound like “Free” but bear with me a moment.

Many areas this year are offering a deal where, if you buy your season pass now, you get to ski or ride for free for the rest of this season. What an incredible offer. You not only get the best skiing of the 2010/11 season, you also get all of next season too. And there’s no better incentive to get out on the slopes than knowing you can go anytime you want for as long as you want and it will actually reduce the per-visit price of your lift tickets.

These areas are offering the “Ski Free Until Closing” deal on next year’s season passes purchased now through the end of March:

Bolton Valley in Bolton, Vermont. $399 Adult (ages 18-69), $249 ($149 if purchased with adult parent’s pass) Youth (ages 7-17) and Senior (ages 70+).

The Boston Ski Show was all about deals. Everywhere you looked had some kind of special going. We’ll be bringing you the best of these throughout the season, but here are a couple which caught my attention:

Black Mountain (800-475-4669) in Jackson, N.H. gets a family of four onto the slopes on any weekend or holiday for just $99. Weekdays its $79. That’s $25/pp for weekend/holiday lift tickets! If you’ve never skied Black, you’ve missed one of the hidden gems of new England skiing and riding. Check it out.

Pats Peak (888-728-7732) in Henniker, N.H. is bringing back their POP (Pay One Price) Saturday nights: $39 gets you Skiing and/or Riding under the lights from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. with rentals, plus tubing, lesson tips and entertainment. It’ll start on December 26. Pats is a wonderful little mountain with some great terrain and a

Ski Butternut (413-528-2000) in Great Barrington, Mass., offers a $25 First-Timers Learn-to-Ski or Learn-to-Snowboard early season package from Dec. 4th through Dec. 22. Weekday/non-holiday lift tickets are $25 all season long.

You've gotta pay to ride the lifts, but why pay more than you have to?

Other than season passes, which are still on sale at most areas at bargain prices, the best lift ticket deal we can find right now is the “Ski NH Anywhere Anytime” ticket packages.

These are discount tickets (about a 20% average savings), fully transferable good for any time, including weekends and holidays. Deals on weekend and holiday lift tickets are usually about as common as snow in July . . .

You have to buy a total of 12 tickets for at least two of the member areas of Ski NH. This is a great way to get out on the slopes with your whole family, a group of friends from work or whoever. Again, the tickets are fully transferable—anyone can use them any time during the season.

For complete info go to www.skinh.com/anywhereanytime.cfm, or call 1-800-88SKINH.

If you live near or pass through the Berkshires, Ski Butternut (413-528-2000;) in Great Barrington, Mass. is offereing an incredible early-season deal for first-time skiers and snowboarders. From opening day (projected for November 27) through December 22, a beginner ski or snowboard package lesson, rentals and beginner area lift ticket (four carpet lifts) is only $25.

Shawnee Peak (207-647-8444) in Bridgton, Maine is having their “Annual October Lift Ticket Sale.” Buy a pair of fully transferable, any time lift tickets on line any time through October 31 for $85/pair! That’s $10.50 off each ticket.

Okemo Mountain Resort, (1-800-786-5366) in Ludlow, Vermont is offering a direct to lift “Sunday Only” season pass for $359 (it was $299 before October 12—keep that in mind for next year). It has four blackout dates but is otherwise good for every Sunday of the season. Assuming you ski 15 Sundays, that’s $24 per day of skiing. Great deal!
