The mid-October nor’easter that hit northern New York and New England this week has everyone thinking about first tracks and getting prepped for snow season. After all, Sunday River was skiing by this time last year.
Whiteface got a goodly amount of snow by Friday afternoon (check out the “picture of the day” on their still-summery website). But Vermont seems to have gotten the jackpot. According to Tom Horrocks, Killington got 14 inches atop Killington Peak (elevation 4,241 feet) and six inches at the K-1 Lodge,(elevation 2,500 feet.), while Jay Peak is saying (unofficially) 12 to 14 inches at the summit and 8 inches at the Tram base.

That’s more than enough snow to slide on. Sadly, the ground’s still warm and it isn’t going to last. So here’s our question. Did anyone get out and make tracks in it? Does anyone know who was first? Does anyone have a photo? Send it to me: timjones@easternslopes.com and we’ll make them famous as the first skier or rider in the northeast for the 2010/11 season!
