More Proof That Winter IS Coming: Sugarloaf Begins Snowmaking!

Posted by David Shedd on November 18, 2010 in Alpine Skiing/Snowboarding, Destinations, Maine, News, Snowsports
Sugarloaf's snowguns opened up for the first time in the 2010-2011 season today! (Sugarloaf photo)

Finally, temperatures are dropping, and the race to get ski mountains open is on in earnest!  The latest to join the elite group of early adopters is Sugarloaf, which started operations this morning.  At last count, they had more than 40 guns operating, and were working to get more going(UPDATE:  As of noon Friday, they’re up to 150 guns running!!!).  Temperatures were in the low to mid 20s, ideal for blowing snow, and Mother Nature was doing her part by throwing out a few flurries at the same time.  The first guns were working on Tote Road and Sluice.  Up near the top, colder temperatures allowed traditional technology guns to make snow, while down near the base area, Boyne Low-E fan guns worked their magic in more marginal conditions ( much better use of that gun than the craziness of the Tough Mountain Challenge!).

Temperatures are forecast to remain cool right through the weekend, so the ‘Loafers are planning on continuing to lay down the white stuff, with a goal of opening on the 21st.  Yes, that’s right…that’s Sunday!   So, pray for arctic blasts to come down from the frozen north, and get your skis ready!

It won't be long before the whole mountain is white like this! (Sugarloaf photo)

And don’t forget,  if you want to escape from the in-laws on Thanksgiving weekend, Sugarloaf will host the 26th annual Tin Mountain Round Up on November 27th-28th, when guests can ski or ride for just $30 if they donate three or more canned food items to help supply local food banks.  Point out to the relatives that you’re doing it for charity; they’ll never know you’re just trying to escape from them!
